Groot is a fictional character from Marvel Comics. He is a Flora Colossi from the Planet X, the capital of the branch worlds. He belonged to the species known as Groot which is why his name is similar to his classification.

Ever since Groot was a sapling, he would spend time with the Maintenance Mammals rather than his fellow saplings. He chose to protect the rights of the animals and fungi who contributed to maintaining Planet X's ecosystem.
Groot even showed his loyalty towards those animals by protecting them when other saplings attacked them. One day, he even went on to kill one of the saplings while defending the Maintenance Mammals.

Because of this, Groot failed in getting back to his original size. That is when Baby Groot got introduced in Marvel Universe.
Groot in Marvel Cinematic Universe
In MCU, Groot has a similar story. He is a Flora Colossus as well as Rocket Raccoon's partner in crime. The pair started their journey by traveling across the universe in search of bounties.
During one of their journey, they crossed paths with Star-Lord and Gamora. Then they put on a fight with each other just before getting captured by Nova Corps. All of them got put in the Kyln Prison where they meet Drax the Destroyer as well.

During their time in Kyln prison, they came across Drax the Destroyer. But soon after, all of them came up with the plan to escape and they were successful as well.
All of them had their own idea regarding the Orb. Because of this, they had conflicts between themselves. Afterward, they lose the Orb to Ronan and Nebula. Finally, they agree to Peter's plan of attacking the Dark Aster in order to retrieve the Orb. Since then they started calling themselves, the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Sacrifice for the Rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy
During the Battle of the Xandar, Guardians of the Galaxy put forth their best effort to gain victory. A different form of Groot was also seen during this battle.
During the fight, the ship got damaged. While everyone tried to run away, Groot formed a large branch to save the rest of the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Rocket begged him not to make a sacrifice to save his friends.
But Groot wasn't in the mood to take his advice. Instead, he wiped the tears from Rocket's face and delivered a famous dialogue, "We are Groot".
Meet the Baby Groot
While saving his friends from the crash, Groot did pass away. However, Rocket recovered a small part of Groot which enabled him to regrow Groot's body.
Slowly, Groot started getting bigger. Baby Groot even enjoyed dancing to "I Want You" by The Jackson 5. But while growing up, he was kind of shy in nature.
Whenever Drax would look towards him, he would freeze up. But as soon as Drax looked away, Baby Groot would start dancing again.
Battle against Ego
To defeat Ego the Living Planet, the Guardians of the Galaxy made a plan. Baby Groot helped the Guardians as well to execute the plan.
While executing the plan, all of them did face some issues. But at last, they did manage to defeat Ego. But unfortunately, Yondu Udonta lost his life.
Helping Thor
After finding Thor in Space, the Guardians of the Galaxy bring him into the ship. Then Thor explains everything to them. And even asks for some help to create a new powerful weapon to fight against Thanos.
Later, Thor went along with Rocket Raccoon and Groot to build Thanos-killing-weapon. Some issues did arrive while building the Stormbreaker. A handle to the powerful axe was missing. Then, Groot chop-off his own hand to form a handle for Thor's new weapon.
Battle of Wakanda
After managing to create a powerful weapon, Groot went to Wakanda along with Rocket and Thor. As soon as they arrived, they went for the battle. Groot even managed to deal good damage to the army of Thanos.
During the Battle, Thor introduced Groot to Captain America. And they both greeted each other. At the end of the battle, everyone failed to stop Thanos from collecting all the Infinity Stones.
This allowed Thanos to snap causing half of the population to disappear. Among several characters to disappear, Groot was one of them as well.
Battle of Earth
When the Hulk snapped back everything back to Normal, Groot joined The Avengers to go against an alternate Thanos and his army.
This time around, everyone managed to achieve success in defeating Thanos. But while doing so, MCU lost a few of its characters. Iron Man and Black Widow lost their life. Captain America returned to the past and turned out to be an old man.
